I love the artworks I've bought from Jen Bekman's
20x200 project:
Panda and
Drawing. 20x200 is such a great idea: use the economies of both the internet (for promotion and presentation) and print-on-demand technologies (for production) to sell reasonably priced editions of photographs and other artworks by emerging artists. And it offers an intellectual spectator sport as well: keep an eye on the various editions to see how well and fast they sell, and conjecture on what this says about the tastes and means of the art-buying public.
Jen is an acquaintance-from-the-WELL, and like many of her other friends and allies on the WELL, I held my breath when, around five years ago, she opened her
Lower East Side gallery. Jen kept it open against odds ranging from rising LES rents to a fitful economy. Today, Jen's doing amazing innovative things like 20x200 that make it ever easier for people to own great art on the cheap, and to support the artists who work with her.
And if all that wasn't enough, I can also say from experience that she's very kind to small animals.
